Catching a wave
If you have any question or information on surfing that you want to send in please send it to my emal address at woodford_5@hotmail.co.uk
If you have been body boarding you will already know the basis of catching a wave. The idea is to get the wave to take the board so you can stand up. When practising its best to try catching the froth after the wave has broken, once you can do this try it on the swell.
To catch a wave wait in the water at the depth you want to ride from with you board facing towards the land. When a wave is about 2 meters behind you jump on the board with your feet touching the back lying on your stomach. Use your feet as you jm to push the board. Once you are in this position begin to paddle until you feel the board get accelerated through the water.
Once you have established this technique try it on the swell. Here you need to paddle allot harder as you can’t use the ground to help you catch the wave. Try aiming the board away from the braking edge of the wave so that you remain on the swell.
You can also experiment with your position on the board. If you find that the board is going into a nose dive slide you self further back on the board. This will lift the nose out of the water. This is very useful if the wave is just breaking as the water may be steep tipping the board down. If you find that you are going to slow to catch a wave and find it hard to paddle move forwards to keep the board flat in the water.
