Surfing
Riding a Wave
If you’ve read my other tutorials u should be able to catch a wave and stand up now but that doesn’t mean that you can surf. Surfing is when you are riding the wave itself not the froth after it has broken.
In order to do this you first need to find your wave and catch it the way you normally would, however instead of paddling straight towards the beach, paddle slightly to the side (at about 30degres to start). Then as you stand up lean back on the board to pull it tighter into the wave so that you are surfing parallel to the beach instead of towards it. If you keep this up you will never have to ride on the broken froth, this means you will be always on the most powerful part of the wave and get the most out of each ride.
In order to do this you need to deicide which direction you are going to surf in before you catch the wave. Look at the waves before you catch one and see where the peak( first point to break) is. if you are to its right surf left and vice versa. Once you are doing this you can change your position on the beach to try and be closer to the peak so you get a longer ride.
Most of the time you will get a number of peaks on one wave this may mean that you will be surfing in one direction and meet the peak in another. It is often difficult to continue riding In this situation so it is often best to jump off. However there will be a ridge between the two waves which you can use to turn and then ride increasing the power and speed.
Once you can ride along a wave confidently you are ready to start come tricks. I haven’t made any tutorials for these yet but if you have written one that you want published send it to me at woodoford_5@hotmail.co.uk
