Surfing

Skimboarding

Skimboarding is a great sport for improving your balance and is fun for beginners and professionals . Its a good sport when the surfs flat and your looking for something to do on a beach or just as something to mess around doing. It is a good sport for people who aren't serious because the boards are cheap and its fairly easy to master but you can take it to a high level and experianced surfers shouldn't treat it as a pointless sport. The only down side to skimboarding is that the shallow water makes it hurt more when you fall off, so don't be put off if you graze your knees.

Getting a Board

You shouldn't spend to much on a board (£10 max) because more expensive boards don't make it any easier and if you decide you don't like it you haven't wasted loads of money on a board designed to last years. There are many different styles of board when you are starting off it doesn't really matter. If you can get a board with a pointed end it is better but untill you start trying advanced stuff you wont notice the difference.

Getting Started

Wait for a wave to come in and begin going out, when the water is about 10cm (4inch) deep you can try skim boarding. To do this hold the board with one hand at the side closest to you and the other at the back, crouch down and throw the board parallel to the water. As it "skims" along run after it and step on. Make sure you go on one foot at a time, front foot first. By going front foot first you pull the board forward with you extra speed rather than it shooting out from under you. Then bring you other foot onto the back of the board.

To start with go parallel to the waves, as you get better you can try riding towards them and turning round as you reach them. Also as you get better run with the board before you throw it so that it has more speed.

The rest is up to you, good luck
